Temperature monitoring. There are so many different types available. But which one is right for you? With many laboratories now being expected to have some sort of temperature monitoring in place, it is important to know which one is right for you. In this month’s blog, we take a look at two options: WiFi and USB data loggers. We analyse the advantages using a WiFi data logger over a USB version.

Alarm functions
Some USB data loggers are equipped with a small speaker and an LED light. The alarm will sound and the light will flash when temperatures are outside the maximum or minimum values set by the user. However, this is not very useful if the logger is placed inside the fridge/freezer or the equipment is located in an empty store room where the door is closed.
When using a WiFi data logger, such as the one manufactured by Eupry, an alarm is sent by SMS or email. Users can choose to have one or several people alerted. This means that the user is notified the moment any limits are exceeded.
No installation of programs
A key drawback of using a USB data logger is that software usually needs to be installed on a standalone PC. This is the way the user accesses their data. The problem is that it can sometimes be difficult obtaining IT authorisation to install a program onto a work PC. This is particularly true with in large organisations where PC user rights are understandably restricted and where the IT Manager can only install new programs.
The advantage of using a WiFi data logger is that all the data is simply pushed into the cloud and the user accesses information via a website or app. This means data can be located anywhere in the world. Particularly useful when the Laboratory Manager goes away on business but still wants the peace of mind that everything is running as it should be back home!
No extra loggers required
One thing that all users must take into account is the cost of calibrating your data logger each year. Many users have extra loggers, so that when their USB ones go off for calibration, they can continue with their temperature monitoring. With WiFi loggers, this is not always needed as many manufacturers simply send you a new calibrated logger for you to use. Then you just send your existing one back in the post. Simple!
Customer support
USB data loggers often come with a self-service manual which they will use to assist with the set up. A WiFi data logger works differently. Users can simply grant access and the manufacturer of the data logger can access their account remotely.
Loss of data
USB loggers often have to have their memory wiped clean every few weeks. This is because the logger’s memory fills up and it needs to be emptied. With WiFi loggers, the data is just sent to a the cloud and so the logger itself does not need to have its memory ‘emptied’.
