It has been some time since I last did a centrifuge product review in this blog, so it is high time that we take a look at another popular centrifuge Henderson Biomedical frequently supply to users across the UK. This month, we take a look at the super versatile Rotofix 32A centrifuge from Hettich.
Hettich Rotofix 32A centrifuge overview
The Hettich Rotofix 32A centrifuge is a non-refrigerated, medium capacity, benchtop centrifuge. Its compact footprint means it can fit into tight spaces. It can spin a range of different tubes, bottle and containers. It is only available in a non-refrigerated version but will be suitable for a wide range of different applications.
Like the Hettich Rotina 380 which was reviewed in a previous blog, the Rotofix 32A has the ability to slot adaptors straight into the rotor. This means that no bucket is required. Users only need to buy a rotor and adaptor. This helps to keep the overall cost of the package down. However, it does also mean that there is no biocontainment when spinning as these adaptors do not have lids. It is also not cost effective for labs that are spinning lots of different tubes as many different adaptors will be needed.
One centrifuge. Hundreds of different applications
One of the main selling points of this centrifuge is its versatility. There are six different swing out rotors to choose from and three different fixed angle rotors. There is also a huge selection of different adaptors designed to meet the demands of most users.
Another big plus point is that this centrifuge can also be fitted with a rotor that spins cyto slides. Many users spin these slides in the rival Cytospin 4 by Thermo. The problem with the Cytospin 4 is that it can only be used to spin these slides and nothing else. This means that users then have to buy two centrifuges for their laboratory- a Cytospin 4 to spin cyto slides and another instrument to spin tubes. The Rotofix 32A avoids this because all the user needs to do is just swap rotors. This can save the user literally thousands of pounds.
Hettich Rotofix 32A centrifuge conclusion
The Hettich Rotofix 32A is a real workhorse of a centrifuge. Like all Hettich centrifuges, it is extremely reliable, but it is also super versatile. It can spin a myriad of different tubes and containers and the cyto rotor adds another dimension of versatility. In short, if you decided to opt for this centrifuge, you would not regret your decision and it will be money well spent.
Pros:
Small footprint.
Versatile centrifuge with hundreds of accessory configurations.
Easy to use very reliable.
Reliable and robust. Everything you would expect from a Hettich centrifuge.
Cons:
Capacity may be an issue for some (max bucket size is 100ml).
Cannot spin microplates.
Could be a little pricey for some.
Only available as a non-refrigerated centrifuge. No good for users who need temperature control.
Overall score: 9/10
