Hettich EBA 270 centrifuge overview

The Hettich EBA 270 is a compact, but powerful small benchtop centrifuge capable of spinning samples at speeds up to 4,000 rpm (2,254 x g). The centrifuge is designed specifically for a small-scale clinical setting, where users want to spin a small number of tubes.

The Hettich EBA 270 is the perfect centrifuge for Doctor’s laboratories or for small clinics that want to spin only a few tubes at one time.

One rotor. A myriad of different options

The Hettich EBA 270 comes with a 6-place swing-out rotor which can accommodate tubes up to 15ml. There is only one rotor available for the EBA 270. However, users are able to spin a variety of different blood collection tubes if they use the little tube inserts which are sold separately. These include BD Vacutainer™ tubes in various different capacities from 2ml to 10ml.

Excellent quality and built to last

Like all Hettich centrifuges, the reliability of the EBA 270 is second to none. This is backed up by a manufacturer’s 2-year warranty as standard. In short, the EBA 270 should give you years of trouble-free use and should easily last 10+ years. This is, of course, depending on how well you treat the centrifuge and whether it is regularly serviced.

Hettich EBA 270 price

There are many small centrifuges out there that you can purchase for just a few hundred pounds. However, most of them use an angle rotor instead of a swing-out rotor and usually can only accommodate small microlitre tubes. The Hettich EBA 270 is unique in that it can not only spin small microlitre tubes, but also a vast array of blood collection tubes as well. Furthermore, the EBA 270 uses a swing-out rotor, which means users can obtain flat, instead of angular, separation.

Other factors to consider

The Hettich EBA 270 conforms to the IVD directive 98/79/EC, which gives the user peace-of-mind when using it in a clinical setting. It is also very quiet and only emits around 51 dB of noise when running at full speed. This is helpful if the device is going to be used in a busy lab, where there is already a lot of residual noise from other equipment in use.

Hettich EBA 270 conclusion

Pros

  • Very small footprint (326 x 389 mm) with a swing-out rotor configuration.
  • A handy impulse button can be used for short bursts of centrifugation.
  • Spins a wide variety of vessels including microlitre, paediatric and blood collection tubes.
  • 2-year warranty as standard.

Cons

  • At 14kg, it might be a little too heavy to carry around if the user is looking for a portable centrifuge.
  • Users are not able to set run profile programmes.

Overall score: 9/10
