Why should I leave an empty space around my centrifuge and how big should this space be?

When a centrifuge is spinning, it will naturally generate heat. Your centrifuge is equipped with powerful fans which are designed to expel this heat. It is therefore vital that you leave enough space around the centrifuge exhaust vent to allow the hot air to circulate. Failure to do this may result in your centrifuge over-heating, for example, if it is pressed up against a wall.

You should also leave around 30cm of space around each side of the centrifuge for safety reasons. This is because if a centrifuge rotor or bucket fails, it will need to spin 90° on its axis to absorb the impact and expell the kinetic energy. If it is not able to do this, the energy of the disruption to may be forced upwards, instead of sidewards and thus risk braking the lid lock and injuring the user. Furthermore, nearby equipment can be damaged if the centrifuge does not have space to spin on its axis.
